The image of this piece sprung into my mind fully formed as a result of listening to radio reports at the beginning part of the Iraq war. I was thinking about how each side demonizes the other-- at the same time considering their own to be precious. Even one's enemy was once someone's tiny and innocent baby; I think it's ridiculously easy to pay attention to the differences between human beings, rather than our similarities. So this piece is meant to be a rebuke-- both swaddling clothes and a death shroud, for that faceless 'other' that is also us.
